As a truck driver, whether you work for a company or you’re an owner operator driver, you’ve probably heard buzz about different types of trucker community service programs and projects around the country. If you’re not already involved in a trucker community service project, then Greatwide Logistics has a couple of trucker-specific suggestions for you:
- Project Linus:Remember Linus from the Peanuts® comic strip? He wouldn’t go anywhere without his blanket.
Well, there are thousands of children across America who are ill or have been traumatized, and would like nothing more than a piece of security in the form of a blanket. Project Linus uses volunteers to make and distribute homemade blankets to children in need. And there’s no better feeling as an owner operator driver than seeing a child’s smile after you hand them a piece of hope.
- Trucker Buddy:
This program connects students and owner operator drivers through pen pal relationships. Truck drivers share their experiences with the students through letters, and the students write back, building a lasting relationship. Plus, the students can learn about things like geography, math, history and social studies through your letters, making learning that much more fun.
- Wreaths Across America:We’ve all seen those “Support our Troops” bumper stickers while on the road—well, here’s your chance to actually do that.
Wreaths Across America coordinates wreath laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery and across the country. There’s also a week of events that includes various ceremonies and a Veteran’s Parade between Maine and Virginia. It’s a moving experience to be a part of this organization.
- Truckers Against Human Trafficking:While our loads are always of the highest quality, there are those out there who transport human slaves—over 27 million of them throughout the world.
Truckers Against Human Trafficking helps educate, equip, empower and mobilize members of the trucking industry to fight human trafficking and remove this nightmare from our society.
These are just a few of the trucker community service programs available to you. As members of the society at large, we truckers have an obligation to make the world a better place. What better way to do it than to give back to the communities that have helped you along the way?
