If a dedicated trucking job interests you, now is the time to prepare for an interview. Looking presentable and being prepared to answer the questions you may be asked will certainly work to your advantage in your trucking job search. Here are some ways to prepare for a trucking interview.

Identify your expectations. The interviewer will be interested about your job preference and why you want to begin or continue your career in truck driving. Be ready to explain your reasons and expectations clearly and concisely, and make sure the job is really what you’re looking for in a career.

Be prepared to discuss your previous work environment. You should be ready to tell the interviewer your likes and dislikes of your past work experience.

Come with questions about the job. Make a list and bring it with you to the interview. Topics you may want to cover include: salary, hours, expected home time, routes, health insurance, toll road costs, and technology that improves the life of drivers,  to name a few.

Be prepared to discuss your qualifications. Think licensing, experience with certain types of vehicles, practice driving particular routes, and success working under pressure. Be sure to address these points with the interviewer. Anything on your résumé is also fair game, plus anything else worthy of sharing.

Contact those you list as references. Alert anyone you list as a reference that you have done so. That way, if they receive a call on your behalf, they will have had time to think about what they might say. Usually, people are flattered to learn that you have listed them as a reference and will shine you in a positive light if they are contacted by a potential employer—so long as you give the reference ample warning.

Dress presentably. You shouldn’t arrive at an interview dressed in flip flops and sweatpants, but a polo or collared shirt and nice jeans are fine. A dedicated trucking job is more laid back than other jobs, so you shouldn’t worry about coming any more dressed up than this.
